H igh definition complex simplicity is once again explored in this geometrical abstract diptych. Photographed in the north back ally of Pine Street in Warrensburg, the structure was in shade. I used my newly acquired Contax Carl Zeiss Planar 85mm f1.4 lens which is capable of gathering copious amounts of ambient light. Originally designed by Dr. Paul Rudolph in 1896, the planar is based on a double Gauss design and optimized for a flat field. It did a beautiful job in delineating the textural detail and subtle color variations of this shallow focal plane. The spatial relationships of various shapes and the interplay between horizontal and vertical elements provide interest. This work asks questions addressing whether spatial perception is mediated by prior mental representations of the environment.

“. . . A choice of lens, for example, could be used to alter, spatial relations and relative scale, but the soft focus lens was verboten because it obscured detail and thus violated the first commandment. . . .” - Ansel Adams; discussing f/64 "club"
