hooting with a zone plate on a digital camera is extremely gratifying. It has appeal as a unique combination of a simple yet complex imaging method. Focusing light by means of diffraction is operating at a quantum level. The structure of the formed image is quite beautiful and unlike any other optic. It works especially well under high contrast conditions producing illustrations that are soft yet hold exquisite detailing. The more I use it the more I appreciate it. Perhaps it is an acquired taste.
“Unlike any other visual image, a photograph is not a rendering, an imitation or an interpretation of its subject, but actually a trace of it. No painting or drawing, however naturalist, belongs to its subject in the way that a photograph does.” - John Berger
