Mission Church

   Pueblo Indians
Converted subjugated
Lands colonized

I n the Pecos National Historical Park there is much to explore. “Pecos preserves 12,000 years of history including the ancient pueblo of Pecos, Colonial Missions, Santa Fe Trail sites, 20th century ranch history of Forked Lightning Ranch, and the site of the Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass.” This is an adobe church ruin that dates from the early 1700's. Built by Spaniards, it is interesting how one culture decides to justify the control of another culture as some kind of righteous crusade. Of course this kind of manipulation continues all over the world today, with the practitioners claiming they are doing a divine good. The dubious notion that my make-believe god is better than yours persists. Even so, there is a spiritual feel to this structure, tied to its location and the centuries of human activity that occurred here.

“At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity; idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols.” - Aldous Huxley
