o symbolize the spiritual nature of this shrine, here I shot directly into the sun rising above the east end of the ruin. In Pueblo tribal organizations the cardinal directions played a prominent part, each society having its own series of rites and ceremonies often performed in secret. The mythology and religious beliefs underlying their original culture became intertwined with the doctrine disseminated by the Spanish missionaries.
