A
s towns evolve, once vibrate areas can lose favor and languish. Topeka is 60 miles west of Kansas City, and began as nothing more than a ferry crossing over the Kaw River on the Oregon Trail. As it developed, it grew equally on both sides of the waterway. By the late 1860s, Topeka had become a local commercial transportation hub providing river and rail access to national trade markets. Floods and economic despair, however, stopped growth on the north bank, while growth continued to the south. Today North Topeka is diminutive and despondent, with most of the city is built on the south side of the river.
