Backstop

   Play area
Wayward ball
Far out thwart fence

S ome photographs made on road trips seem common place and utterly unrelated to travel. This one was shot early in the morning on a walk around the motel in Garden City, Kansas. Of course such a scene could be found in AnyTown, USA. Gazing upon the backstop and the way it fractured the background, it reminded me of the photographic work of Stephen Shore, known for his colorful deadpan images of banal scenes and objects.

“…I would be in a flat nowhere place of the earth, and every now and then I would walk outside or be driving down a road and the light would hit something and for a few minutes the place would be transformed.” - Stephen Shore
