TrailLines | Sunny rain Mystical light Turnpike rest stop |
T
he Kansas Turnpike is defined as a “tolled freeway” that runs in a general southwest-northeast direction from the Oklahoma border south of Wichita to Kansas City. Built in the 1950's before the establishment of the Interstate Highway System, it has subsequently been re-designated as four different Interstate routes: I-35, I-335, I-470, and I-70. This photograph was made at the most eastern rest stop on the I-70 portion.
As we pulled into the parking area, it began to rain, although it was still sunny. Looking up there was one small weakly defined cloud that was the only plausible source, along with a pale rainbow to the west. The precipitation made everything wet creating reflections and luxurious color saturation, while the light possessed a magical quality.
“Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything.” - Charles Kuralt
