llegedly in 1810, a Chimayo friar saw a light shining from a hillside. Digging at the scene, he found an object that resembled a cross, thus establishing this location as “sacred.” A chapel was built over the hole from which the “miraculous” crucifix of Our Lord of Esquipulas was found, and then the incredible healings began. Ever since, believers have traveled to this shrine to have their ailments cured. Even now thousands of people pilgrimage yearly, especially during Lent and Holy Week. This place is a fascinating mix of Christian and native rituals, whether you believe in magical healing powers or not.
“Almost as bad as time travel is the danger of magical healing powers. Again, this can become a quick fix and a cheat, draining any suspense from your story. If you've got an elf who can cure everyone of any illness just by saying a magic chant, then why should I think anyone will die?” - A. Lee Martinez
