lthough hard to believe today, when railroads were being constructed in the American West, physical confrontations led to years of armed conflict between competing companies, essentially low-level guerrilla warfare. Lots of money at stake in sparsely populated rugged territories.
A short 18-mile branch line of the once huge and now defunct “Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway” is still operated as a tourist passenger attraction and limited freight carrier. Might be fun for $32 coach class round trip.
