Fort Union | Guardian Santa Fe Trail Southwest defender ruins |
N
ear the Mountain and Cimarron branches of the Santa Fe Trail, this large fort was established in 1851. Now a National Monument, the remains of the structure are preserved and are quite remarkable. Primarily used to subjugate the native North American Indian, the highest number of enlisted troops was 1,660, recorded on September, 1861. The fort served as the essence of national power in a vast new land acquisition far removed from the occupied east.
“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our Children.” - Ancient Indian Proverb
