Cadillac Ranch | Near Amarillo Modern Stonehenge Mutating graffiti layers |
T
hree vehicles pulled of the road and six photographers tumbled out. The air was hot like a blast furnace and the landscape was flat and bleak, but out in a dusty field sat a roadside attraction Mecca – the Cadillac Ranch. Just outside Amarillo, ten aligned classic cars are buried at an angle grill-first in the parched soil of the Texas panhandle and thrust stoically above the barren backdrop. Left to the elements to slowly rot, visitors have embellished the shrine with spray paint graffiti modification. After applying the paint, the spent cans are thrown on the ground at the base of the monument – a poignant statement on the mentality of our culture.
“Trash has given us an appetite for art.” - Pauline Kael
