Conurbation

   Agglomerated urbanization
Physically merged
Peripheral zone

A lthough rain quickly runs off the asphalt and concrete surfaces, somehow trees can still survive in the metropolis. Their presence helps to soften an artificially constructed harsh environment, much of which is unpleasant and miserable for human occupancy, yet remains densely populated. Other life forms also congregate in tightly packed colonies, like ants and bees, but such behavior never struck me as desirable. This leads to questions of choice and free-will versus the obligation to conform to the prevailing social order.

“Our individual lives cannot, generally, be works of art unless the social order is also.” - Charles Horton Cooley
