Boonville Katy Bridge

   Fate of overpass
Could threaten
Entire trail

F ollowing the right-of-way of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, the 225 mile Katy Trail is the longest Rails-to-Trails conversion in the United States. The lands over which railways pass often have different owners - private, rail operator or governmental. Depending on terms under which the property was originally acquired, the type of operating rights may also vary. A problem for the Katy is this old non-functional bridge over the Missouri River; the cost to renovate is prohibitive while demolition legally compromises the right-of-way. This may nullify the legal basis for the entire Katy Trail, making it possible for original landowners to claim portions of the trail as their property, closing those sections.

“The hardest thing in life is to know which bridge to cross and which to burn.” - David Russell
