he practice of consumption, especially of unnecessary and potentially harmful products, is promoted and sustained by a prevalent symbolic environment. Without the influence of cultural exposure and pressure, it is doubtful anyone would purposely inhale smoke. Advertisers and politicians know they can influence people to do ridiculous things, like relinquish their money or freedom, for nonsensical ideas.
