Dramatic proscenium

O ne of the grandest movie palaces ever built in the United States, the Midland Theatre is a 3,573-seat theater located in Kansas City. It was built by Marcus Loew in 1927 at a cost of $4 million, an amazing amount for a theater in its day. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1977, movies stopped being shown there in 1981 when it became a performance hall. For the last 10 months, however, the irreplaceable structure has been vacant, possibly at the end of its life. The developers of the Power and Light district plan on gutting the Midland Theater and converting it into a super night club with an installed dance floor.

“That's the way things come clear. All of a sudden. And then you realize how obvious they've been all along.” - Madeleine L'Engle
