lthough we often generically refer to golf courses as “links”, technically this denotes a specific category of course defining the nature of the scenery where the sport originated. True links are located in coastal areas, on sandy soil, often amid dunes, with few water hazards and few if any trees. The term derives from the fact that the original land used for golf was unsuitable for agricultural, and being located amid sea and farmland was thus a "link" between the two.
