Spirit of 76 | Preserved train car Bicentennial commemoration History squared |
I
t has been approximately twenty years since MKT trains ran along the route that's now the Katy Trail. But remnants of railroad history exist all along the trail. Old train cars are located at many trail heads, including this one in Windsor. When the park service was in the process of restoring the car for display, they found that it had an under painting of an American flag and other symbols from the Bicentennial celebration that was held in 1976.
“As we begin our third century, there is still so much to be done. We must increase the independence of the individual and the opportunity of all Americans to attain their full potential. We must ensure each citizen's right to privacy. We must create a more beautiful America, making human works conform to the harmony of nature.” - Gerald R. Ford July 4, 1976
