L ong focal lenses are wonderful in their ability to each out and grab visual relationships from a distance - great for picking out details and isolating things from distracting material. This effect is similar to moving closer to the scene, but is not the same, since perspective is a function solely of viewing distance. By isolating light patterns out of customary context, a freshness of vision can transpire and a new reality materializes.

A telephoto is a specific lens construction which places the optical center outside of its physical assembly making the lens smaller so it is conveniently functional.
