henever I acquire new camera equipment a surge of creative energy is unleashed. Shot with great excitement, just outside the door to Grinstead, is my first “diffraction optic” telephoto image, made with the Canon EF70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens. By employing a three layer DO element, this lens is shorter and lighter than a normal telephoto zoom lens, and features no chromatic aberration.
“Diffraction refers to various phenomena associated with wave propagation, such as the bending, spreading and interference of waves emerging from an aperture. A diffraction grating is a reflecting or transparent element, whose optical properties are periodically modulated. Most commonly the diffraction gratings are realized as fine parallel and equally spaced grooves or rulings on material surface. When light is incident on a diffraction grating, diffractive and mutual interference effects occur, and light is reflected or transmitted in discrete directions, called diffraction orders.” - Wikipedia
