ensors in digital cameras are innately sensitive to infrared radiation. Many manufactures will put an IF cut-out filter over the sensor so these wavelengths do not affect the image. One nice feature of many Sony digital cameras is the use of the sensors inherent IR ability by selecting “nightshot” mode. In this mode, the camera will emit IR radiation and record it as reflections back from the scene. This is designed to make images at night of objects at close range without using any visible light. But if you place an IR only pass filter in front of the lens and shoot during the day in this mode, it will make nice highly detailed infrared photographs.
“The older view of the nature of heat was that it is a substance, very fine and imponderable indeed, but indestructible, and unchangeable in quantity, which is an essential fundamental property of all matter.” - Hermann von Helmholtz
