Negative Space

   Relevant shape
Around and between
Focal plane uncertainty

N egative is the opposite of positive, especially when positive represents the tone and color of an image as it might appear in reality. The photographic process often reverses all tonal values and colors originally exposed; highlight areas appearing dark/opaque and shadows appearing light/transparent.
In another sense, negative space is empty space or a void.

“It is not exactly the presence of a thing but rather the absence of it that becomes the cause and impulse for creative motivation.” - Alexander Archipenko
