egative is the opposite of positive, especially when positive represents the tone and color of an image as it might appear in reality. The photographic process often reverses all tonal values and colors originally exposed; highlight areas appearing dark/opaque and shadows appearing light/transparent.
In another sense, negative space is empty space or a void.
