O bjects such as flags are symbols representing broad concepts. The hazard of symbolism is that the meaning of the symbol transforms over time. Thus communication attempts that incorporate such symbols are often ambiguous. Fortunately in America we have the first amendment that protects free speech; we do not have to communicate clearly.
