P
hotorealism is an art movement which began in the late 1960's, in which subjects and scenes are painted in a manner directly resembling highly detailed photographs. The subject matter is frequently ordinary and without particular interest; the proper subject of a photorealist work is the way in which images are interpreted to create an internal representation of external reality.
One of the leading practitioners of the Photorealist movement is Richard Estes, who specializes in street scenes depicting elaborate reflections in window-glass. In today's image, I have made a photograph that resembles a photorealistic painting, appealing to my sense of circular logic.
“Many modernist works try to uphold the idea that works of art can provide the unity, coherence, and meaning which has been lost in most of modern life; art will do what other human institutions fail to do. Postmodernism, in contrast, doesn’t lament the idea of fragmentation, provisionality, or incoherence, but rather celebrates that. The world is meaningless? Let’s not pretend that art can make meaning then, let’s just play with nonsense.” - Mary Klages
