Color Cluster

   Hue combinations
Symbolic in flags
Signify ideals or loyalty

S ome believe the colors used in a flag are supposed to represent the values of that country (or other entity). Red, white, and blue are often colors that allegedly represent revolution and freedom, based upon the French tricolor. Probably it is prudent not to put too much faith in such associations. Here is a partial list of the countries that use this color scheme in their national emblem: Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, France, Haiti, Liberia, Malaysia, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Croatia, Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Yugoslavia. Not much in common here.

At its core, a flag is really just a variant of the corporate logo. A good logo should embody the following characteristics:
  • be unique, and not subject to confusion with other logos among clientele
  • be functional and usable in many different contexts while retaining its integrity
    • remain effective reproduced small or large
    • work in "full-color", but also in two color presentation (black and white), spot color, or halftone
    • be able to maintain its integrity printed on various fabrics or materials (where the shape of the product may distort the logo)
  • abide by basic design principles of space, color, form, consistency, and clarity
  • represent the brand/company/country appropriately
