Water moves pictures

T his month's American Flag image is a large graphic painted on an odd little building containing Nick's Outfitters in Pleasant Hill, MO. It was captured from the passenger side of a moving vehicle – thus is a drive by shooting.

It appears that this business is in violation of the flag code. Section 8i of the code reads, "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever."

You might wonder if there are penalties for violating the Flag Code. The answer is no. The Flag Code is intended as a guide to be followed on a purely voluntary basis to insure proper respect for the flag. So the writers of the code deemed advertising to be a disrespectful activity. This is weird, given that advertising is the bastion of capitalism, a fundamental operational principle of the country and culture the flag symbolizes.
