Layering

   Separate functional component organization
Sequential hierarchical interaction
Contiguous interface

U nlike some of my recent posts, this cityscape depicts structures of relatively recent vintage and thus of good condition. Here I was interested in the diagonal partitioning of space into three distinct regions, each with is own individual characteristics. The dialog between each of these areas as they interrelate, existing and coexisting in the urban environment, provides graphic tension. The whole vista is pictorially flattened in this view, even though the white building at the top is in the distance.

The trickiest part of successful cityscape photography is finding advantageous vantage points. Cities are inherently chaotic and intense, but judicious viewpoint and framing can extract elegance and order. With practice, more and more opportunities present themselves. It becomes possible to glide about in the constructed space and isolate many different visual experiences.

“In practice a photographer does not concern himself with philosophical issues while working; he makes photographs, working with subject matter that he thinks will make the pictures.” - John Szarkowski
