Picket | Shadow tracks the sun Door ugliness fascinates For no particular reason |
P hotographers are most successful when they transcend the past and the future and become totally absorbed in the moment. It is, however, a challenge to make a conscious and concerted effort to be in the present and remain fully responsive to the familiar. Today's image is an exercise in mindfulness.
I pass by this door several times daily on my walk to and from work and generally don't notice it. On this occasion, the orientation of the earth's position relative to the sun cast a shadow not observed before. The verticality of the siding contrasted nicely with the diagonal of the fence shadow, and is the primary reason I pulled out my camera. Closer examination revealed a patina of oxidized blue paint covered by random marks rubbed onto the door's surface. The small contrasting red rectangular area under the handle is a nice touch. A rather ordinary and simple object, normally overlooked in my regular environment, has now provided a satisfactory image.
By being mindful I mean being fully aware of the present; aware of everything that is currently going on within and without. When we're mindful we perceive sensations that previously were blocked. This opens up a wide plethora of visual possibilities.
