I enjoy the intellectual and emotional experiences generated during the image production cycle. In this regard, contrary to the current attitude advocated by most post-modernists, there is a place for the physically attractive in art. Sometimes it is acceptable to make photographs just because the resultant image is beautiful, or at least an idealized observation of beauty. Of course, arriving at a concrete definition of what constitutes beauty and its relationship to visual art is imprecise. But usually the attractive is easier to live with and more likely to be contemplated than the ugly, and beauty can be experienced as an intrinsic part of the message conveyed.
Another common miscalculation is the notion that knowledge and technology inhibits creativity. I have encountered this mantra throughout my professional life. This is total gibberish. It is precisely knowledge and technical expertise that make creativity and expressiveness possible. There can be no virtuosity without discipline. There can be no resourcefulness without constraints. There can be no revelation or nuance without expectation.
“ I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That's deep enough. What do you want - an adorable pancreas?” - Jean Kerr
