Hole in the Wall | Multiple surface nodes Layered texture network Vacant position in a solid |
A s I photographed this subject, I was standing in the middle of what once was Jackson's Appliance Center, at 311 N. Holden Street in Warrensburg. On the night of May 25, 2004, the store burned to the ground. All that remains of the building is this short foundation wall. The hole in the wall probably is the remnant of a basement window. The cause of the fire could not be determined due to the extensive damage it caused, however a major electrical storm had just passed through the area and lightning is a suspect.
The image is a study of space, texture, and pattern - recurring themes in my portfolio. I especially like to take three dimensional spatial relationships and flatten them down on the picture plane. In this case, the hole works to interrupt this forced spatial leveling. The strong sidelight accentuates the textures which are organized into broad horizontal bands. The small rectangular stone on the lower left casting the dark shadow provides a counter balance helping to unify the work.
“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”--Frank Herbert
