F or a long time I have been interested in fragmented images, and the concept of images within images. Over the years I have explored this idea in many different ways, both in content and technique. In this iteration, I sorted through my recent archives of digital captures and collected together a group of abstract textures and surfaces. Next I created a Photoshop action that scaled and distorted each image from a rectangular aspect ratio into a square. This action also reduced the individual image size to make the subsequent layered composite more manageable. Since each image was scaling down, bicubic sharper was employed as the interpolation method to preserve more detail.

I then created a large canvas that allowed me to assemble a collage of sixteen images, and placed all images each into their own layer, facilitating organizational alignment. The images now could be arranged and rearranged, each individual in relation to its neighbor. I worked on this puzzle-like exercise for approximately 30 minutes, and you now can experience the result.

“Good image composition is more than just an organization of visual elements. The power the artist brings to his or her work is greatly enhanced by subtly controlling the eye movements and mental states of the viewer. By providing impact and the pictorial forces that drive the viewer to explore the work, the artist succeeds in communicating the complete impression rather than just a shallow glance.” - Richard Nichols
