   Reflections
Reveal more
Than the reflected

A s I journey in search of sensations and new perceptions, I have noticed that reflections are particularly appealing. In fact, frequently they are more interesting than the actual objects they reflect. I speculate this is because in effect, under these conditions, the amount of information striking the retina is increased. The sum total of the sensation will be complex. It will include light from the radiation source reflecting off the original object and then reflecting off the reflecting surface. It will also include and combine with some of the source light bouncing off the reflecting surface. Plus the reflecting plane will further amend the rays from the reflected object, based upon its surface modulation properties. All of this adds up to potential visual fascination.

While we are on the topic of energy stimulating the retina, the eye with its simple lens focuses an upside-down image. This is the sensation. As we process the information, and begin to formulate a perception, we invert it. This is one of many image processing algorithms that we invoke unconsciously to formulate our perception of reality.

“While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.” - Dorothea Lange
