M uch of my work is about the fragility of existence and the effects of time on people and things. Sometimes objects naturally decompose in visually arresting ways, which through careful framing and extraction can become interesting abstract images. The key is the spatial organization of the compositional elements to make an engaging statement divorced from original context. Rather than being about a small detail of a nineteenth century building, the work becomes more about line/shape relationships and how those essentials express basic human emotions and experiences.

I seek imagery that operates on many visual and intellectual domains simultaneously. In this example, I have combined strong cross diagonal lines with organic central shapes, differentiated by texture, color, and value. If the image was cut up into four separate pieces of equal size, each individual image would be visually much different. In other words, each of the four corners is quite diverse. This type of image will make an excellent building block for constructing a successful “Quadrotype”, as I will show you tomorrow.

“If a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up.” - Richard Avedon
