T his image is mostly about a great image processing technique. To start with I have two separate photographs of surface textures that were shot at different times and places. I am always on the lookout to find and capture interesting abstracts like this, some as complete statements by themselves and others as source material for future combinations.
In this composite I have created a three layer sandwich in Photoshop. The first layer is one of the surface texture images used as a background. The next layer is a type layer with a single large character that fills the frame. The type font is “Circular Building Blocks 1”, one of the hundreds of True Type fonts I have found and downloaded from the web. On this layer I have set both a “bevel and emboss” and a “drop shadow” layer effect. The last layer is the other texture photograph set as a clipping mask, so it only shows where the type is located.
The beauty of this arrangement is that the design is totally editable. By simply changing the character in the font layer I can get any number of different designs.
In the type layer, all I did was change the font size, rotate 45% and add more characters to get this result.
