Outline | Shadows go in and out Flaring flashing crashing to the ground Trail of fading light follows |
T his semester in my Color Imaging class I have weekly assignment themes. Students in the class are required to produce an image each weekday that addresses that week's theme. I shoot images along with my students, so they can see how I approach the visual challenge. This image was made for the “Light and Shadow” weekly assignment theme.
Light is the external physical phenomenon that enables the sensation of sight. Shadows are areas of darkness caused by opaque objects. Cast shadows can have a duel effect; either they make an object look more three dimensional, or hide an objects outline, shape and form. Assessing light and shadow relationships allows us to look past "things" and see how objects and lighting interact. This consideration, if done regularly, normally results in noticeably increased compositional quality.
Using natural light, the objective in this assignment is to see how light defines the subject as well as the space around it.
“Where there is much light, the shadow is deep.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Comments
Shadows are the hopeful souls of the objects that produce them. Sometimes they are overtones, sometimes they work behind the scenes. A world without shadows would be a world without intensity. On another plane, animals are shadows of man.
