his is another installment in my United States flag series of images. This one was captured on a windy winter morning while walking to work, as Old Gory majestically whipped in the breeze over the “Family Video” rental store. The clouds were particularly striking on this day making a nice backdrop to the rippling fabric.
Do the colors of the flag symbolize anything? Supposedly the white signifies purity and innocence, red signifies hardiness and valor, and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. Or maybe not; we report and you decide.
“The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.” - from a book about the flag published in 1977 by the House of Representatives

The flag means more to me than I am able to express. I believe it should be cherished as a symbol of all that this great nation should be and is sometimes, but is not sometimes, too. To protect it in a constitutional amendment, however is a serious mistake. One of the POW's from the Vietnam War wrote that the thing their captors feared and hated the most was the freedom with which he and his comrades expressed themselves. Everyone in this nation should be free to express her/himself in a manner s/he chooses so long as it doesn't impinge on public safety and the rights of others
