High Door

D irect Observation
The relationship of this unreasonably lofty door to the car parked below provides the visual jibe that sparked this image. The scene made me wonder just why that door was put there in the first place. It has obviously been modified over the years. Perhaps there previously was more to the building which at some point was removed, leaving the door high above any reasonable exterior access.

Although the elevated door location is the central theme here, there are subplots. One half of the visible windows are boarded-up. The door itself sports rich rust deposits that have gracefully run down the wall from corner channels. The whole melancholy sight evokes questions as to what might be going on inside of this building now, and how has it been used in the past?

Graffiti seems to echo the shape of the car. The cool color of the car complements the warm tones of the building. Also the age and design of the late nineteenth century warehouse contrasts with the look and feel of the early twenty-first century automobile. Why this solitary car is parked here and what possible business could its owner be on in this old and mostly deserted part of the city remain a mystery.

“ Photographs are perhaps the most mysterious of all the objects that make up, and thicken, the environment we recognize as modern. Photographs really are experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood.” - Susan Sontag
