Trophy Hunter | Objects of desire Once acquired Often lose their appeal |
A mongst other attributes, photographers are hunters and gatherers. The forces driving some individuals to collect objects parallel those forces that inspire others to create and keep personal photographic records. Universal desires to understand time, explore identity, build memories, develop life narratives and value existence explain why we create and accumulate visual images.
As our experiential base broadens, the quality of our collection can potentially improve. This is not so much the result of expansion in our technical skill, but rather refinements of our visual perception.
"Photography has not changed since its origin except in its technical aspects, which for me are not important". - Henri Cartier-Bresson
Exceptional images made last year may no longer retain their luster. A devoted artist expects this as the natural consequence of growth and development. But the collection stands - it tracks and marks progress.
