Push Push

   As stair steps pierce glass
Echoes of our presence
Reflect in door frames

I enjoy pushing against visual boundaries. I am interested in using all available tools and methods to create images. By developing skill in one area, (say pinhole photography for example), I feel I improve my skill in another (say photogravure printing). As I learn new processes, this knowledge enhances my conceptual ability and broadens my visual language.

"I say play your own way. Don't play what the public wants. Play what you want and let the public pick up on what you are doing, even if it takes them fifteen or twenty years." - Thelonious Monk

All photographs are abstractions made by humans responding to stimulus through a physical manifestation resulting from controlling the imaging process. Any given visual statement may call for more or less control depending on intent. I do not feel constrained to limit my approach to image making by thinking only certain controls have validity.

I believe this is why Stieglitz, as editor of the now legendary magazine Camera Work, featured paintings along with photographs. Stieglitz thought artistic expression results from a balance of "inner and outer vision" constrained by personal experience. As experience expands, vision becomes more sophisticated.
