S ometimes the mood or emotional feel of a location is best conveyed with a “less-than-sharp” image. One way to achieve this is with a long handheld exposure. Although this is always a somewhat unpredictable procedure, I love how it forces color to modulate and blend together thus becoming more important than form. Of course it takes considerable time devoted to practicing the craft to begin to effectively control the visual environment in this way. But the advantage is the development of adaptability to conditions once considered unsuitable. Many more venues provide visual opportunities as the skill set broadens. This is a classic example of how ideas evolve out of practice. Photography demands that concept and method challenge and modify each other throughout the creative process.
“Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask "how," while others of a more curious nature will ask "why." Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information.” - Man Ray
